Brief History of Zurich Insurance

Zurich Insurance was founded in 1872 as Versicherungs-Verein, a reinsurance company which was established at the behest of the Schweiz transport insurance firm. The founders of this firm were board members of the Schweiz transport insurance firm. The following year, the company commenced operations. It added accident insurance to its service offerings three years after its inception. The company later rebranded to "Zurich" Transport- und Unfall-Versicherungs-Actiengesellschaft. 1894 was a significant year in the company's history because it was the period it earned the licenses to operate internationally. That same year, "transport insurance" was renamed accident and liability insurance.

The company was also renamed Zurich ''Allgemeine Unfall- und Haftpflicht-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft in 1894. In 1998, Zurich agreed to a merger deal with the financial arm of British American Tobacco to create Zurich Financial Services. This company has two firms, Zurich Allied AG (a Swiss company) and Allied Zurich PLC (a British company). Both firms were listed on the Swiss Market Index and FTSE 100, respectively. In 2012, Zurich Financial Services rebranded to Zurich Insurance Group. In late 2015, there was a change of leadership in the company. In late 2021, Zurich purchased Special Insurance Services in Texas. In early 2022, the firm changed its logo.
