The five sons of the family - Christian, Claude, Gerard, Michel, and Yves helped the family business before University. Their family had established a support business for farmers but after graduating, the brothers came up with the idea to expand into other areas like selling products of use to farmers. They started selling CD audio media and later expanded their business to computers and software including video gamers.

Ubisoft operated out of offices in Paris at the time of commencement but later moved to Creteil in 1986. The Chateau in Brittany was used as the primary space for development by the brothers.
