The Tata Group was founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868. His son, Dorabji Tata became the chairman in 1904 and later established the Tata Iron and Steel Company. Today, this company is referred to as Tata Steel. Sir Dorabji took the company internationally and expanded into London. Tata Power was India’s first hydro plant. Under JRD Tata’s chairmanship, the company’s assets grew over 5 billion US dollars. In the following years, other companies that formed under the Group were Tata Airlines, Tata Motors, and Tata Consultancy Services.

Ratan Tata became the chairman in 1991 during a year of economic liberalization in India. Several companies acquired by the Tata Group are Tetley, Corus Group, Jaguar, and Land Rover. The Group has over 7 lakh workers that are present across 100 countries.

Culture & vibe

The culture at the Tata companies is quite inviting. Every employee gets the opportunity to interact with trained seniors in the industry. Since the company is a multinational, you get ample chances to travel. The work culture can be taxing for new interns and recruits who have recently graduated or are in their first year of service. There is a lot to learn, and the work pressure can be daunting in a new environment.

The Tata Group companies have a competitive vibe. You are expected to be punctual, orderly, and accountable. Experts in the industry will guide you ahead if you are ready to learn and work hard.

Recruitment process

The Tata Group recruitment process has four rounds under its recruitment procedure:

The written tests have two sections, namely, aptitude and technical. The quantitative analysis carries 50% weight, while the logical reasoning and verbal ability carry 25% weight each. Several topics to be covered are numbers, ratio and proportion, time-speed-distance, percentages, blood relations, coding and decoding, data arrangements, vocabulary, and sentence correction.

Next, the group discussion round is the mass elimination round. The main purpose of the group discussion is to see how you would perform in any leadership role. Any topic can be given for discussion. The timed discussion is assessed by experts. Your performance will be marked on grounds such as clarity, ease in countering statements, and activeness of the mind. Your interpersonal skills and communication skills are noted closely. As many as ten participants may take part in the group discussion together. The technical interview is the third stage of the recruitment process. Candidates need to prove their familiarity with technical concepts about their field. There may be more than one round of technical interviews. This is another elimination round. While the first round may be related to general technical concepts, the second round tends to be more focused on individual programs, projects, and career opportunities. You need to be aware of your core subject as well as related concepts.

Lastly, the HR interview round is the final round. There are basic questions such as an introduction about yourself, why you are the most suited for this role and why should the company hire you.

Career prospects

The Tata Group is an integration of multiple companies, offering opportunities to work at local and international locations. Some common openings at the Tata companies are the role of an engineer, senior executive, assistant manager in finance, online marketing manager, communication manager, scientist, translator, and chef. New career prospects are available regularly.

Remuneration

The average remuneration for an employee at the Tata Group is approximately US $3,956 per year for an engineer to almost US $5,500 per year for a contractor. While it is the US $268 a month for a sales executive, it can be approximately US $565 for a business manager. Educational qualifications also play a role in determining the pay.
