The Standard Chartered Bank Story

In 1969, Standard Chartered Bank came into existence via a merger of Chartered Bank (of India, China, and Australia) and Standard Bank (of British South Africa). After the merger, Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria placed 13% of its share capital with Nigerian investors.

After the Civil War, Nigeria experienced a significant economic upturn. The Nigerian military attempted to control the country's retail banking sector. This prompted Standard Chartered Bank to reduce its investments in Standard Bank Nigeria, which was later rebranded as First Bank in 1979. However, till 1996, Standard Chartered Bank remained one of First Bank's shareholders.

In 1999, Standard Chartered moved into the Nigerian financial market again and began operations on the 15th of September. Today, Standard Chartered Bank is one of the fastest-growing banks in the country.
