The Standard Chartered Story

John Paterson, a Scot, established the Standard Bank in the Cape Province of South Africa in 1862. After establishing a sizable number of branches, Standard played a significant role in funding the expansion of the Kimberley diamond fields starting in 1867. Later, when gold was discovered in Johannesburg in 1885, Standard expanded its network even farther north. On its route to London, half of the output from the second-largest gold field in the world traveled through The Standard Bank. Over the years, Standard has grown significantly in Africa, but from 1883 until 1962 it was officially known as the Standard Bank of South Africa.
