Muriel Van Meel

It is essential we communicate and work as a team, especially with these massive projects so when the start day comes, we can hit the ground running.

6.30 AM

The alarm buzzes, and I roll out of bed.  Breakfast is essential and I always prep a healthy over-night chia pudding for the morning. Ready to tackle the day!

I like going in early so I can try and the traffic in the afternoon.

7.00 AM

I’m out the door, keys in hand. My trusty car awaits for - the commute to East Tamaki offices and usually takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic. I mentally prepare for the workday ahead.

7.30 AM

At the office, I settle into my workspace. First things first: green tea. I love starting my day off with a cup of green tea to make me focus and relax.

8.00 AM

We have a run through with the logistics team where we go through everything we want/need to achieve for the week and what each person can do.

For example, for the recycling mobilisation we work as a team. My colleague Jonny is currently assigning drivers to routes, and I am making 'Class 2 maps' which are maps for the smaller trucks, which we use for one-way roads or narrow streets.

11.00 AM

We have a recycling mobilisation meeting with the Auckland residential team where we run through the project, highlight any action items and, what we are working on and catch up on any progress made. It is essential we communicate and work as a team, especially with these massive projects so when the start day comes, we can hit the ground running. There are many aspects to take into consideration when working on projects at WM residential collections, such as driver trainers, managing new staff, fleet, operating plans, dispatching and planning our day-to-day.

12.00 PM

I work all the way to lunch which I normally take at 12:00 or 12:30, I take small walking breaks in between, top up my tea and catch up with the team around me.

I usually bring my lunch in to save money, but the Café HUB has a range of options and is affordable if I decide not to bring any lunch.

1.00 PM

A normal day doesn’t consist of too many meetings as most of us are in the office and easy to have a quick catch-up or discuss anything of concern.

2.30 PM

During this time, I focus on any project work. This can include planning routes, if they are morning blocks, estimated travel time, tipping time, and establishing an expected finishing time.

4.00 PM

Time to head home! The commute can get quite long depending on traffic and if I leave on time. If there is heavy traffic, I always put on a podcast to keep me busy.

5.00 PM

When I am home, I like to rewind, reflect on the day and, what needs to be done tomorrow. Depending on how I am feeling I like to wind down the day by stretching, my legs by going for a walk or to the gym.
